LORETTE

Lorette is a Local Urban District (LUD) also known as an unincorporated community, in the Rural Municipality of Taché. It is located 25 km from the Southeast Winnipeg perimeter.  It is a lovely, small community that winds along the Seine River and has many local conveniences within its borders. Multiple paths, greenery, larger lots, affordability and its close distance to Winnipeg attract many families to the area.

REAL ESTATE TREND

Lorette is mostly made-up of single-family detached and attached homes, but there are some multi-family developments that offer bungalow-style condos, townhouses, and apartment-style options as well. You can find a variety of layouts throughout the community such as bungalows, two storeys and split levels and the ages on many of these homes can vary from turn-of-the-century all the way up to new construction.

SCHOOLS AND SERVICES

Lorette is within the Seine River School Division and also home to the Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine (The Franco-Manitoban School Division often referred to as DSFM).

Children who enroll under the Seine River School Division and wish to stay in English track programming will likely go to Dawson Trail School from Kindergarten to Grade Eight.

Ecole Lorette Immersion School is a French Immersion Milieu school from Kindergarten to Grade 8.

College Lorette Collegiate is a dual-track high school offering both French Immersion and English programming for students coming from Dawson Trail School and Ecole Lorette Immersion School.

DSFM has one school located in Lorette. Ecole Lagimodiere is a Kindergarten to Grade 8 French Elementary School. High School options for students within the DSFM programs will likely be Ecole/College Regional Gabrielle Roy, located in neighbouring Île-des-Chênes.

HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS

Lorette does not have any medical centres within its borders. The closest hospital is Hôpital Ste-Anne Hospital. It is a general hospital situated in the neighbouring RM of Ste. Anne and is about 17-minute drive via Dawson Road.

St Boniface Hospital, in Winnipeg, is Manitoba’s second-largest hospital and is about a 28-minute drive from the community.

SHOPPING

Lorette has everything you need for your everyday living.  The main grocery store option is a Co-op Food Store located right next to the high school.  Marg’s Organic Plus is a small local shop that specializes in natural pure honey and jam. The community also hosts a Farmers’ Market at the Community Complex during the summer months.

For home improvement needs, visit Lorette Home Hardware or check out Josy Furniture for design inspiration! Do you need more variety? St Vital Centre is located at the corner of St Mary’s and Abinojii Mikanah (formerly Bishop Grandin Boulevard) in Winnipeg and is about 25-minute drive from the community. The centre consists of a Walmart, Hudson Bay and Zellers, London Drugs, Marshalls and HomeSense, Old Navy, Sportcheck, restaurants and more.

ENTERTAINMENT AND RECREATION

As the Seine River meanders through Lorette, it provides beautiful views for many of the waterfront homes.  In the summer you can often see people paddling along the Seine River.

There are multiple pathways running through the community that join many of the parks and ponds.  This makes for many safe routes for kids walking home after school, or for families enjoying a stroll outdoors.

Danylchuk Park is where Settler’s and Pioneer’s trail connect. These trails wind around the three man-made lakes in the area. The parks offer timber frame shelters that are perfect to enjoy the shade during a hot summer day.

Community Spirit Park is located at Station Road but can be accessed from three other streets as well. This park is where you will find a variety of athletic fields. It consists of a baseball diamond, volleyball and basketball courts, a playground as well as a picnic shelter.

Greg Smith Park is designed with the littles in mind and they call it a tot lot.  Here you will find swings for the little ones to enjoy.

Additional sports fields can be found on Public Lane. Lorette Tennis Courts includes a basketball court and an open green space beside the two tennis courts.

There is a community recreation facility in the area too.  It can be found at 1420 Dawson Road. The Lorette Community Complex, built in 1964, offers indoor and outdoor activities all year-round. It consists of an indoor arena, soccer pitches, basketball court, outdoor rink, toboggan slides, walking paths and two baseball diamonds. Adjoining the Complex is the Lorette Curling Club.

In January 2023, Premiere Heather Stefanson announced a new recreational facility project. The Tache Community Centre will be home to a library and a 62,000 square foot arena that will replace the current Lorette Arena.

Adjacent to the Community Complex is the Lorette Spray Park.  This splash pad also offers a small playground, washrooms and picnic area too! Surrounded by trees and just next to the splash pad is the Lorette Skate Park. The park recently received benches and a shelter, great additions for its athletes to rest out of the sun!

Lorette also provides space for your four-legged family member to run. Tache Community Dog Park is located on Dawson Road, with waterfront views!

If you are a serious golfer you don’t need to leave the area to hit the links! Lorette Golf Course is right inside the community. This golf course is a 9-hole course that advertises challenging fairways along the banks of the Seine River. There are also two additional golf courses within a 10-minute drive from the area. Southside Golf Course in nearby Grande Pointe is an 18-hole course featuring 11 lakes.  Prairie Oak Golf Course in nearby Île-des-Chênes is a 9-hole course with a restaurant.

There are several other fun places nearby to visit if you live in Lorette.  The Centre of Canada Park opened in 2017. It is the exact longitudinal centre of Canada. The Park is situated a 5-minute drive away from Lorette just off the TransCanada Highway. It features a huge Adirondack Chair, vintage farm equipment, picnic tables and a little free library.

Splatters Paintball Park is located a 17-minute drive from Lorette in New Bothwell, Manitoba. It is Manitoba’s largest paintball facility with six unique playing fields. The Park consists of firepit areas, a kids’ playground, beach volleyball court, a Golf Driving Range and an indoor staging arena.

A-Maze-in-Corn is located 20 minutes away, in St Adolphe, Manitoba.  From mid-August to late October this popular destination offers a variety of entertainment such as a corn maze, a petting zoo, hay and pony rides, pumpkin barn, zip-lines, day camps, a haunted forest and the Sunflower Expo which is an 8-acre sunflower field.   From January on (weather permitting), the amusement farm is home to the World’s largest snow maze!  It also offers other activities for those visiting in the winter months including a Snow Mountain, bonfire pits, a snow bar and a huge toboggan run.

The neighbouring Local Urban District, Île-des-Chênes, is home to the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre. The Centre houses a veterinarian hospital where staff work to treat injured wild animals. The Murray Education Centre and Outdoor Discovery Space is an 18-acre campus that provides educational programs, private and corporate events for those who would like to know more about Manitoba’s wild life.

Tinkertown Family Fun Park in Winnipeg is a great place to spend a day with the whole family. It is an outdoor amusement park with fun games, sweet treats, bumper cars, and a wide selection of rides for both kids and adults. This park is approximately a 15-minute drive from Lorette.

WHY WE THINK THIS IS A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD TO LIVE IN

With its country-like setting, strong community feel, affordable real estate and lower property taxes, Lorette is a perfect community to raise a family in. This neighbourhood has everything form parks, schools, shopping and recreation options within its borders, but is also conveniently close to Winnipeg.  Many within the area work in Winnipeg as the commuting distance is reasonable.  All this while they still enjoy true prairie living.

Here are some local favorites you might want to try if you are in the area:

Chicken Chef Lorette Family Restaurant. This restaurant is known for its fresh food and big portions. It is a great choice for dine-in or pick-up.

Brians Drive-in on Dawson Road is another local favourite that offers delicious home-style burgers and ice cream!
