Canterbury Crossing is a new development located in the far east corner of Winnipeg. This neighbourhood is an extension of the existing community of Canterbury Park, and part of the bigger area of Transcona. This 77-acre community has plenty of planned green spaces and paths that make it a quiet and desirable spot for young and growing families. Due to its close proximity to the perimeter, it is a popular destination for those looking for convenient access around the perimeter to various destinations both inside and outside of the city.
Canterbury Crossing is now in its final phase of development and lots are still available for single family dwellings, duplexes, and multi-family options on the most southern side of the community. These lots can be standard, lake-view or park-view lots. As you walk around the neighbourhood, you will notice that the homes here are typically more contemporary architectural styles with modern details. The development offers a wide variety of housing types including bungalows, two storeys, duplexes and townhomes.
Canterbury Crossing is within the River East Transcona School Division with no future plan on building a new school within the community.
Harold Hatcher School, in Canterbury Park, is a Kindergarten to Grade Five school, and will be the catchment for English track students. Students will then attend Arthur Day Middle School from Grade Six to Grade Eight which is also located in Canterbury Park. The high school option would be Murdoch MacKay Collegiate which is within walking distance from the community along Redonda Street.
If French Immersion is the preferred track, the elementary school option will be Ecole Central from Kindergarten to Grade Four. Then students would attend either Ecole Regent Park from Grade Five to Eight, or Ecole Munroe from Grade Six to Eight. Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau is adjacent to Murdoch MacKay Collegiate and offers French programming for high-school students.
Transcona provides opportunities for elementary and middle-school students wishing to attend German and Ukrainian programs, too. Not an option in many other Winnipeg neighbourhoods. Donwood School is a German bilingual elementary school from Kindergarten to Grade Five. Prince Edward School is a Ukrainian bilingual school with programs from Kindergarten to Grade Five. If your child wishes to stay on the Ukrainian or German track for middle school, Chief Peguis Middle School has programming from Grade Six to Grade Eight in German and Ukrainian as well. This school is a bit more of a trek from the area, located in North Kildonan.
The neighbourhood’s close proximity to the Perimeter makes it an ideal location for post-secondary students looking for a highway drive to the University of Manitoba East Fort Garry Campus. The Red River College Exchange District and Universite de Saint-Boniface are also only a 20-minute drive away but students would likely go through the city to get to these destinations.
There is no hospital in the immediate area of Canterbury Crossing. Concordia Hospital is a 15-minute drive away and St Boniface Hospital is a 20-minute commute.
Canterbury Crossing has been designed to be entirely residential. However, there are many amenities within close proximity to the area. Safeway Kildare is the closest grocery option and is along the Canterbury Park border. A little bit further, along Regent Avenue, you will find a plethora of shopping options. Kildonan Place Mall offers a selection of stores and services like Save-on-Foods, Marshalls and HomeSense, Shoppers Drugmart, H&M, and more. Adjacent to the Mall are other major retailers like Costco, Canadian Tire and Regent Corner Shopping Centre. Other commercial shopping centres in the area are Crossroads Station Shopping Centre and Kildonan Crossing, where you will find a wide variety of big box stores, services and restaurants such as Walmart, the Real Canadian Superstore, Home Depot, Best Buy, Winners, Staples, Sport Chek, Michaels, FreshCo and plenty more.
Canterbury Crossing was built with family in mind. Brad Little Park is currently the only finished park in the neighbourhood and it features a walking path along the pond and a playground closer to Desrosier Drive. Desrosier Drive Park will be the other major green area, with a sports field and off-leash dog park once the final phase is complete. If you are a nature enthusiast there are plenty of other opportunities just minutes away.
George Olive Nature Park is within walking distance from the community. It offers a beautiful walking path around the pond where you can take in nature, run, bike or just sit back and enjoy the fresh air. Adjacent to this park is the Transcona Optimist Park, home of the Transcona Nationals Football Club. In the summer, you will catch many of the locals catching an evening game here.
Duff Roblin Parkway Trail is a 40.9 km walking, running, hiking, road and mountain biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trail along the Red River Floodway. It is worth the visit for those looking to take in wildlife or observe a beautiful sunrise over the floodway. You have two options to access the trail. You can either drive on Dugald Road, make a U-turn and access it along Deacon Road, or you can approach it from Gunn Road and use the designated parking lot.
Looking for a day of family fun? Deer Meadow Farm is 10-minute drive from the neighbourhood and has so much to offer: Farmer Day Camps, Sunfest (a 3-acre Sunflower field with walking trail), Corn Maze, Petting Farm, Wild Game Preserve, Fallow Deer viewing, Bale Pyramid, Tired Mountain (a giant sandbox made up of old farm equipment tires), Farmer Golf, and a Farmers Market, just to name a few.
Victoria Jason Park is on the border of Canterbury Park. It offers a playground, a skateboard park, baseball diamonds and soccer fields in the summer. The center of the park features a small hill (but big for Winnipeg standards), which is busy with families sliding in the winter.
Transcona Bioreserve is another nature attraction and is only a 12-minute drive away. It is popular for runners, walkers, bikers and dog walkers.
There are no plans for a community centre or recreational facility within the borders of the community. However, the neighbourhood is located in a well-established area of the city and as a result, there are many amenities for you and your family to enjoy.
Transcona East End Community Centre offers activities year-round. The most popular activities being hockey, ringette, skating, baseball, softball and soccer.
South Transcona Community Centre is also a short drive down Dugald Road. The Centre consists of a multi-use outdoor rink for hockey, ringette and public skating in the winter and basketball in the summer. It is also home to a baseball diamond, a soccer field and a wading pool.
Buhler Recreation Park is a 140-acre outdoor facility with multiple athletic fields. The Park hosts softball and baseball tournaments and offers fields for ultimate sports, soccer, flag football and lacrosse.
Driving a bit further on Murdoch Road you will reach Lake Shirley, Manitoba’s official water ski and wakeboard training facility.
Transcona Kinsmen Centennial Pool and Transcona Aquatic Park are also popular destinations for families in the area. This is the largest outdoor waterside attraction in operation in Winnipeg, today!
If golf is your summer pleasure, Transcona Golf and Country Club, and Golf Central are both within minutes from Canterbury Crossing.
Transconians also like visiting rural areas in the winter time. Springhill Winter Park is great for skiing, tubing and snowboarding and you will often run into your neighbours at Silver Springs Park where they enjoy the slopes during the snowy months.
Canterbury Crossing is designed to be a family friendly community that is already part of a well-established neighbourhood with community centres, schools, green spaces, public transit and amenities. It is also one of the most affordable newer-construction communities in all of Winnipeg as the lot prices are still far more affordable than comparable developments. Thus, it has become a very popular destination for younger families.
Ten minutes outside of the community and you have a world of activities at your disposal. If you love sweets, you probably will want to stop by Sweet C Bakery. Regent Avenue offers many different dining options for a great night out such as Fionn MacCool’s, Montana’s, Qdoba, Olive Garden and many other fast-food options.
“I lived here for almost 20 years. Transcona feels like you are living in a small town inside a city. Everyone is very friendly. There are a lot of parks right outside of your house. It actually one of the best neighbourhoods in the city” | “It’s very quiet, not a lot of crime, not a lot of traffic. Lots of friendly neighbours.” |
