Canterbury Park is a family-oriented community in the East side of Winnipeg and part of the larger area of Winnipeg known as Transcona. The meandering streets are designed to control traffic and allow plenty of quiet bays where children can safely play street hockey or go for a bike ride. It is home to many parks and paths, schools, services and close to all the amenities your family could need. This community is your “gateway to getaway” as it offers quick access to the Perimeter Highway – making a weekend escape to the lake very easy.
Development within Canterbury Park was quite heavy in the 90’s and early 2000’s. The majority of the homes are single family homes, with bungalows, two storeys and cabovers being the most common housing type. The lot sizes are usually 50’ or smaller – with the average being closer to around 44’ wide.
If you are looking for more affordable alternatives in this area, there are some attached-style options such as townhouses or single-family attached homes. Condominium living is more limited here as there are only two complexes within the borders of Canterbury Park. One of them is a townhouse-style complex and the other is an apartment-style complex.
This community’s schools are managed by the River East Transcona School Division. There are three schools within the borders of Canterbury Park, however your school catchment may vary depending on your address.
For English elementary, students will be sent to either Harold Hatcher School in Canterbury Park or Wayoata School in East Transcona. Both schools offer education from Kindergarten to Grade Five. All students from the neighbourhood will attend Arthur Day Middle School in neighbouring East Transcona from Grade Six to Eight. The English high school for the area is Murdoch MacKay Collegiate, which is right on the Eastern border of Canterbury Park.
French Immersion Elementary school alternatives are Ecole Central and Ecole Margaret-Underhill from Kindergarten to Grade Four. The dividing line for which school your child will attend tends to be Kildare Avenue. There are two middle schools offering French programming. Ecole Regent Park is a Grade Five to Grade Eight institution. Ecole Munroe Middle School provides Late French Immersion options from Grade Six to Grade Eight. French Immersion students will go the College Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau for their high school studies. This school is beside Murdoch MacKay Collegiate and also right on the Eastern border of Canterbury Park.
The River East Transcona School Division also provides academic choices in Ukrainian and German for learners living in the Canterbury Park community. German Bilingual programs are available at Donwood School from Kindergarten to Grade Five. English-Ukrainian Bilingual education is offered by Prince Edward School from Kindergarten to Grade Five.
If your child wishes to stay on the German or Ukrainian track, Chief Peguis Middle School has instruction in both languages from Grade Six to Grade Eight.
Post secondary institutions are a bit further from the community, however the Red River College Exchange District and the Universite de Saint-Boniface campuses are an easy 20-minute commute via Regent Avenue and the University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus is about a 30-minute drive away with most of that travel spent on the Perimeter Highway.
Canterbury Park has one convenience store within its borders. Bigger grocery options are located in nearby neighbourhoods. The most accessible option for your daily needs is Safeway Kildare, which is a very short drive, but is also in a walkable distance from most parts of Canterbury Park. The community is also known for its quick and easy thoroughfares both into and out of the city, which makes getting to the “main drag” of Regent a breeze. The Avenue offers an abundance of shopping choices in Crossroads Station Shopping Centre, Kildonan Crossing, Regent Corner and Kildonan Place. Here you will find a variety of options including mom-and-pop shops and national stores like Save-on-Foods, Walmart, the Real Canadian Superstore, Freshco, Home Depot, Best Buy, Winners, Canadian Tire and a Winnipeg favourite – Costco!
Canterbury Park is home to many wonderful parks. George Olive Nature Park, formerly named Transcona Horse Pond Park is a 16-acre green space with several lowland marshes and a Second World War era cordite ditch along the northern edge. Adjoining the Nature Park is Transcona Optimist Park which is home to the Transcona Nationals Football Club, a great place to cheer on your local team.
A short distance from the Football Club is Millenium Park that offers soccer pitches, a basketball court and a playground. It also provides access to the Transcona Trail, a 6.7 km multi-use asphalt path for walkers, runners and cyclists. Along the trail you will encounter wildlife or you can stop along the way at various mini-parks such as the Rotary Tall Grass Nature Park, Train Park, Transcona Community Bioreserve and Cordite Trail.
Just outside of the area, across the Perimeter Highway is Duff Roblin Provincial Park. It is a 40.9 km walking, running, hiking, road and mountain biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trail along the Red River Floodway. It is worth the visit for the wildlife encounters and amazing sunrise views over the floodway. One of its designated parking lots can be accessed via Gunn Road.
Victoria Jason Park is a popular place for locals. In addition to the large fields and skate park, it offers one of very few hills within Winnipeg. It is a large hill by Winnipeg standards, and a popular sliding destination in the winter!
Canterbury Park does not house any recreational facilities within its borders and there are not currently any plans to build one. If you step just beyond the borders of the community, you will find an abundance of recreation facilities. Transcona East End Community Centre is a newer facility within the area and it offers activities year-round, namely indoor hockey, ringette, skating, baseball, softball and soccer.
South Transcona Community Centre is also a short drive on Dugald Road. This Center consists of multi-use outdoor rinks for hockey, ringette, public skating in the winter and basketball in the summer. In the summer, it offers baseball pitches, a soccer field and a wading pool.
Oxford Heights Community Club offers indoor and outdoor soccer, baseball, softball, basketball. They also have two outdoor rinks for hockey and ringette.
Transcona Kinsmen Centennial Pool and Transcona Aquatic Park are a quick commute from the area. The outdoor water park consists of four waterslides, a spray pad, a zero-grade entry pool and picnic areas. The indoor facility has water fitness programs, a sauna and a slide.
Buhler Recreation Park is a 140-acre outdoor facility with multiple athletic fields. The Park hosts softball and baseball tournaments and offers fields for ultimate sports, soccer, flag football and field lacrosse.
