The Maples is a larger neighbourhood in the north-west quadrant of Winnipeg. The borders for the area are CP Arborg Rail Line, Leila Avenue, Pipeline Road, and Inkster Boulevard. It is home to a variety of schools from early years to high school making the community desirable for families. Ample green spaces, recreational facilities and amenities are right within its borders but it is also within close proximity to the downtown core and the Perimeter Highway making it easy to get in and around the city quickly and conveniently. The Maples is approximately 20 minutes from the Winnipeg James Armstrong International Airport, a 20-minute commute from the Downtown core or the Canada Life Centre, and about a 40-minute commute from IG Field/University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus.
The bulk of the construction in the area happened between 1960’s and the 1980’s. The community is comprised of mostly detached family homes, however the west side of the neighbourhood has a newer area that consist of a selection of attached home options. You will find a variety of layouts in the Maples. Namely bungalows, two storeys, multi-levels, bi-levels freehold homes as well as apartment and townhouse-style condominiums.
The Maples is within the Seven Oaks School Division and as it is a larger geographical area the school catchment will vary based on address.
O.V. Jewitt Elementary School, Elwick Community School and Arthur E. Wright Community School offer English programming from Kindergarten to Grade Eight. Arthur E. Wright Community School also provides English-Filipino bilingual academics from Kindergarten to Grade Six.
James Nisbet Community School is a Kindergarten to Grade Six English elementary school.
Determined by address, French Immersion Programming is available in two educational institutions. Ecole Templeton is a Kindergarten to Grade Five French Immersion Milieu school. Ecole Constable Finney School is a dual-track Kindergarten to Grade Five elementary that offers both English and French programming.
Middle school programs are provided at Ecole Leila North which is an English and French dual track school. Students on the English track will attend Maples Collegiate. Students enrolled in French Immersion will continue their studies at College Garden City Collegiate.
The closest post-secondary institution is Red River College Polytechnic Notre Dame Campus and the University of Manitoba Bannatyne Campus. They can be accessed from the area with a 15-minute drive.
The University of Winnipeg, Red River College Exchange District Campus and Universite de Saint Boniface are all about a 20-minute commute from the area.
There are no hospitals within the Maples, however the Seven Oaks Hospital is located just on the corner of Leila Avenue and McPhillips Street. The Health Sciences Centre is not far either, it is about a 15-minute drive.
Shopping in the Maples is limited to specialty stores such as Punjab Grocery and Convenience Store, an Indian grocery and Lucky Supermarket which offers a wide selection of Asian products and produce.
Every Tuesday from July to September, the Wellness Institute hosts a Farmers’ Market at the front entrance. The market provides local, fresh vegetables, fruits, honey, baked goods and gluten free products.
More variety and big box stores can be found along McPhillips Street, which is just a stone’s throw away. Garden City Shopping Centre includes 70 stores, with popular anchor stores such as Canadian Tire, Bulk Barn, Michaels and Seafood City. Adjacent to the mall is Garden City Square that consists of retailers like the Home Depot, Marshalls and HomeSense, Jysk and more. Northgate Shopping Centre has a Save-on-Foods, Dollarama, restaurants, coffee shops and other services. McPhillips Street also consists of a Freshco, the Real Canadian Superstore and Walmart.
There are at least 21 parks and green spaces in the area. All of these parks include playgrounds and some of them consist of additional features like open green spaces, athletic fields and shelters.
Manila-Jefferson Tot Lot, Neville Margate Tot Lot, Jack Moscovitch Park and Arthur Wright/Duval Park have soccer fields along with play structures.
Dunham Park offers ample green spaces, play elements and walking paths. Foxwarren Lake Park has the most picturesque landscape with its walking paths, lake views and playgrounds on both ends of the path.
Larger parks with more outdoor recreational options are Andrew Mynarski V.C. Park and three Community Centre Sites operated by the Maples Recreation Association Inc. and are scattered around the community.
Andrew Mynarski V. C. Park includes five baseball diamonds, four soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts and a BBQ area.
The Maples Monarch Community Centre houses indoor and outdoor sports. The outdoor area at the Centre also known as Adsum Park, consists of two outdoor basketball courts, two outdoor rinks, a jungle gym for children, tennis and beach volleyball courts, a baseball diamond and fields for cricket, hardball and soccer. Adjacent to the Community Centre is the Maples Multiplex Arena. It operates a league-sized rink from September to March and hosts hockey and ringette practices, league games and tournaments. In the summer it is available for social events and indoor sports. The complex and its fields are home to the annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival and parade.
Maples Community Centre Elwick Site houses the Cricket Park and seasonal outdoor rinks. Maples Community Centre James Nisbet Site includes the James Nisbet Nursery, soccer fields and a playground.
Next to the Maples Monarch Community Adsum Site is the Seven Oaks Pool. This recently updated facility offers a universal family change room, accessible washrooms, a multipurpose room, teaching pool and an indoor spray pad. The spray pad is the first of its kind in Winnipeg!
Less than 10 minutes away, just behind the Garden City Shopping Centre, is the Garden City Community Centre and Seven Oaks Sportsplex. The facility consists of three baseball fields, four soccer fields, a basketball court and an outdoor hockey rink. The Centre offers a wide selection of sport programs year-round such as baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, ringette, softball, rookie rugby and more. Seven Oaks Sportsplex houses the Seven Oaks Arena and the Seven Oaks Soccer Complex. Seven Oaks Arena is home to two NHL-size ice rinks, a walking track and a multipurpose room for fitness classes, social, educational and cultural events.
Adjacent to the Seven Oaks Arena is the Winnipeg Soccer Federation North. This 163,000 square foot, indoor soccer facility opened in 2016. It is primarily used for soccer but available to rent for ultimate frisbee, baseball, rugby, football and handball as well. With the electronic curtain feature the field can be divided to suit smaller courts depending on the space needed.
Canada’s leading medical fitness facility, The Wellness Institute is located in Seven Oaks General Hospital. The facility’s mission is to help to prevent illness and improve quality of life for those who develop chronic conditions. It provides a wide variety of services such as massage therapy, personal training, nutrition coaching, weight loss clinics, arthritis and joint replacement rehab, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, mental health care, online services and more.
If you are looking for gyms in the area, the neighbouring community of Garden City is your best bet as it is home to four workout facilities. Shapes on McPhillips Street has both its Co-Ed and Women’s Fitness Centre. The two gyms are located in the same building but have separate spaces. Planet Fitness is in Garden City Square and offers a variety of memberships. GoodLife Fitness is located in the Garden City Shopping Centre and offers a selection of classes like cardio, strength, virtual, dance, aquatic to just a name a few. Fit4Less provides plenty of cardio and weight machines. This gym can be found in the Northgate Shopping Centre.
Maples Academy of Dance offers a wide variety of dance classes for all ages such as ballet, hip hop, lyrical, jazz, musical theatre and more.

The Maples is a desirable community for families with diverse backgrounds and we love the many cultures that are represented here. As a result of the cultural diversity here, the variety of international cuisine is second to none! The Maples is home to a selection of recreational facilities, parks, schools, some of which are the best facilities in the City (in our opinion). It is close to all amenities, too. It is also just minutes away from the Perimeter Highway providing a quick escape to lake country.
Chungchun Rice Dog Maples is an Asian fast-food restaurant, a popular eatery to stop by. Malhi Punjab Sweet House is a great place to try some Indian sweets. Lucita’s Restaurant is just beyond the border of the neighbourhood, but is popular with the locals and serves Filipino specialty dishes.
